Increasing Operator Awareness & Safety: The LED Live Line Indicator

The Research and Development team of our international partner AusProof works tirelessly and are committed to ensuring this priority is being met. Conducting constant reviews of existing products and exploring possible redevelopment options in between designing new and innovative cable coupler solutions, the LED Live Line Indicator is a perfect example of this commitment.
Originally released in 1998 using neon bulb technology, its design was quite revolutionary for its time, enabling easy identification of high voltage couplers with a live current running through them. Its design was also battery-free in order to prevent false positives. After two decades of reliable service to the industry, a redesign of the Live Line Indicator commenced in 2018 in order to brighten this safety feature below ground, and enable its use in open-air operational sites.
In 2020, after two years of extensive research and experimentation with modern technology, neon bulbs, which just weren’t bright enough, were replaced with LED technology. Now brighter than ever before, easily visible both above and below ground, the new and improved LED Live Line Indicator also has a 50,000-hour lifespan, has been designed to use as few electrical components as possible, and importantly, the redesign remains battery-free. By way of a copper conductor, the indicator draws its power directly from the current running through the coupler. When this current ceases, the indicator will turn off.
Listening to the comments and suggestions from various industry individuals, the design of the LED Live Line Indicator was once again before our international R&D team in 2023, this time in order to assist with maintenance efficiency. The dome shape of the indicator has been changed to make the indicator flat and flush with the coupler for easier cleaning and maintenance.
